Irene Violet Smith Irene was born on June 2, 1920 in Kingston, Surrey, England to George Frederick Middleton and Alice Middleton (nee Storer). Irene worked as a factory employee in Britain before and during the War. She met the love of her life Daniel Wilfred Smith while he was in the Armed Services stationed in England, and they were married on February 1, 1944. Irene arrived in Canada on April 10, 1946 as a War Bride. Irene was a stay-at-home mother and together they raised their family until Dan's passing on September 29, 1961. Irene then went to work at the Saskatoon Sanatorium and was there for approximately 20 years while continuing to raise her two children on her own. She was very involved with the War Brides Association and loved to play cards and bowl. Her last three years were spent at Extendicare Care Home. The family would like to thank the Staff at Extendicare for the wonderful care they provided to Irene during her stay. Surviving Irene are her son, Alan (Beverley); daughter, Patricia (Ed) Ratcliffe; grandchildren, Ed Ratcliffe (Melissa), Lissa Ratcliffe (Keith Rieger), Dana Shukin (Brian), Michelle Senft (Darcy); great-grandchildren, Eddy, Michael, Ethan, Paige and Kayleigh. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Irene may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Saskatchewan or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, c/o Box 1004, Martensville, Sk. S0K 2T0.
