OWENS, Hannah "Nancy" (nee Malcolm)Passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Monday, December 9, 2013. Beloved wife and lifelong friend of Owen, loving mother of John, daughter in law Wendy and grandchildren Katie and Jennie. Nancy will be sadly missed by many friends and relatives in England, her sisters Sheila, Dot, May and their hubands David, Charn and Derek and her brother George and their families. Nancy was born on April 2, 1926 in England where she trained as a registered nurse. During her training she nursed soldiers returning to England from the battlefields of Europe. Upon graduation she was awarded the gold medal in nursing and continued her training to become a certified midwife. She worked in hospitals in several cities in England and as a district midwife, Nancy then decided to work in Africa where she became head nurse in a mining hospital in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, where she met Owen. After several years she returned to England where she once again met Owen and they married in 1957. In 1967 the family immigrated to Canada in response to the request of Owen's company. Nancy retrained to qualify as a registered nurse in Canada and practiced for a number of years in Ottawa, London and Oakville, where she also volunteered with the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Children's Aid Society. She worked as head nurse in a retirement home in Oakville and subsequently became its general manager. When she retired from this position she continued volunteering in Oakville. In 2010 Nancy and Owen moved to Ottawa into a retirement home to be near their family. Friends are invited to the Funeral Service to be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 20 Young Rd. ,Kanata on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. Donations in memory of Nancy to Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
