Frances A. Murphy Beloved Cousin, Godmother -- LOWELL -- Frances Alice (Manning) Murphy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Wingate at Belvidere Nursing Home. She was the devoted wife of the late Florence J. Murphy, R.Ph., proprietor of the former Murphy and Callahan Pharmacy in the Centralville neighborhood. Frances was born in Central Falls, Rhode Island on September 23, 1917, the only daughter of the late John B. and May N. (Baker) Manning. Frances received her education in Central Falls and graduated from high school there. Following her education, she was employed as a stenographer and senior clerk for the State of Rhode Island. As a young woman, Frances would travel up to Lowell to visit with family and work in her uncle's store, J. A. Manning Liquor Co., on Bridge Street. It was on visits to the pharmacy that Frances met Florence Murphy. They were married in a Catholic Ceremony in 1951 in Concord, NH and together they celebrated 42 years of marriage. They made their home on Bunker Hill Avenue in Centralville, and were communicants of St. Michael's Church, where Frances held membership of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She also worked for a time in the Book Department of Pollard's on Merrimack Street in Downtown Lowell. Frances was deeply religious and devoted her life to her faith in God and devotion to St. Francis of Assisi. She was a benefactor of many religious charities and organizations including The Secular Franciscan Order, A Member of the Third Order of St. Francis, The League of Catholic Women, and The Capuchin Mission Association. Frances and her husband "Murph" enjoyed traveling, especially on Catholic Pilgrimages to Rome and many other religious places around the world. -- Frances enjoyed painting and loved animals, particularly cats and dogs. She was a kind and gentle woman, who enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She took pleasure in gathering for holiday meals. -- Frances was the loving sister of the late John Bernard Manning, Jr. who died on January 30, 2009. Frances is survived by her cousins, Eleanor C. (Manning) (Sullivan) Donahue of Dracut, and Edward Brodeur of Rhode Island; her Godchild, Katherine J. Rourke, who cared for her for the past 15years, and her husband James of Lowell; a niece, Mary Miele; a nephew, Brian Bauchman; her cousins, James Donahue and Michael Donahue of Dracut, William Manning of Londonderry, NH, Maura Modeski, and James Manning of Lowell; also several cousins living in Rhode Island. MURPHY -- In Lowell, July 13, 2013, at Wingate-Belvidere Nursing Home, Frances A. (Manning) Murphy, 95, a longtime Centralville resident, and the beloved wife of the late Florence J. Murphy. Family and friends may call at the FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 MOORE STREET, LOWELL on TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 16, 2013 from 8:30 A.M. until 10 A.M. Frances' Funeral Mass will follow at 11 A.M. at The IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, (Lower Church) 144 East Merrimack Street, Lowell. Her burial will take place in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, please have Masses said in Frances' memory at your parish church.
