MITCHELL Mrs. Florence (Cissy) Adele (Tinney) Mitchell, age 78 of Waterbury, succumbed at St. Mary's Hospital on Friday, December 21, 2007. She was the widow of Mr. John Quincy Mitchell Sr. Mrs. Mitchell was born in Ansonia on October 31, 1929 to the late Fannie (Randolph) and Charles Edward Tinney II. Mrs. Mitchell retired from New Opportunities Inc. of Waterbury where she worked as a social worker for more than 20 years. She was very active in her beloved Berkeley-Warner Community. She was an original member of the Berkeley Heights Tenant Council, a member of the Berkeley-Warner Community Council and she also served for many years on the advisory board of the Woodrow Wilson After-School Program. Mrs. Mitchell, along with others, initiated an annual food, clothing and toy drive for the Berkeley- Warner area and maintained these drives after her retirement. She was involved with the Berkeley Knights Drill and Drum Corp. since its inception. She worked diligently for her beloved Berkeley-Warner Community. She received recognition from the Waterbury Housing Authority, the Governor's Office, the State's General Assembly and New Opportunities Inc. of Waterbury for her many years of dedication to the community she loved to support. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her loving sister, Mrs. Mildred (Marianne Tinney) Little of West Orange, N.J. and her beloved brother, Mr. Charles (Chubby) E. Tinney III of East Haven. She leaves to carry the charge of her legacy six sons and five daughters, Mr. John Q. Mitchell Jr. (Carol) of West Orange, N.J, Frederick A. Mitchell and Dale Mitchell of Houston, Texas, Timothy Mitchell (Judy) of Hampton, Va., Jeffrey and Charles E. Mitchell of Waterbury, Lori A. Mitchell of Kansas City, Mo., Tracy L. Mitchell of Storrs, Mrs. Carla (Robert) Bowens and Cheryl L. Mitchell of Waterbury,. Mrs. Mitchell leaves a legacy of 32 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren to cherish her memory; her brother's daughters, Jo-Ann Tinney of Kansas City, Mo. and Gina Tinney-Moyle of Atlanta, Ga.; her "adopted" children, Twanna Marshall and Kevin Eason of Waterbury; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Mitchell's "Homegoing Service" will be in Zion Baptist Church on Saturday, December 29, 2007. Calling hours will be at the church at 10a.m. to be followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. At all other times, calling hours will be at her daughter Cheryl's home at 136 Platt Street, Waterbury. All arrangements are being handled by Petteway Family Funeral Service of Waterbury. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Mitchell's memory to the Berkeley Knights Drill and Drum Corp, Berkeley-Warner Rec. Center, 277 Long Hill Road, Waterbury, CT in care of Officer Michael Tripp.
