Emily Johnson, area resident for 50 years, died on September 22, 2004 at Sound Shore Medical Center. Born and educated in New York City, she was 76 years old. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Eddie Johnson, and their three children - Eric, Lars, and Lisa Johnson. Emily was active in a multitude of community and civic organizations. As a member of the Rye Presbyterian Church, she served on the Board of Deacons, taught church school, and was active in many of the church's projects and committees. In addition, she performed a leading role with the Women's Association Thrift Shop, which raises thousands of dollars annually for local non-profit organizations. At the time of her death, Mrs. Johnson was the membership chairwoman of Friends of Rye Town Park; volunteered at the Rye Nature Center; and helped to raise money for United Hospital in Port Chester through its Twig organization. Additionally, after 25 years with the Rye Historical Society's administration, Emily retired in 1995 but continued to work as an archivist. In recognition of her long record of community contributions, Rye Post #128 of the American Legion conferred upon Emily Johnson the Americanism Award in 2002. Also surviving are beloved grandchildren Karl and Rebecca Johnson of St. Louis, MO., and Kirsten, Colin, and Will Johnson of Trumbull, CT. A memorial service will be held at the Rye Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00 pm. Private interment. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent, and will be gratefully received in Emily's name, by Friends of Rye Town Park (P.O. Box 345, Rye) or the Rye Historical Society (Purchase St.)
