Elizabeth Maguire Johnson - SAVANNAH - Elizabeth Maguire Johnson, 86, of Savannah, passed away under the care of Hospice Savannah at Buckingham South on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 after enduring a prolonged illness. She is survived by 2 daughters, Lynn Elizabeth Berry and son-in-law, Kenneth Berry,and their children, Jennifer and Stephanie Berry; and a great grandson, Austin Osborne all of Roanoke, Virginia; Daughter, Mary Margaret Johnson of Savannah, Ga; a son, Thomas Howard Johnson of Savannah, Ga. Two special friends, Beth Saraf of Savannah, who was always there to lend a helping hand, Mariann Marshall of Oklahoma, who was a life long friend and a sorority sister. Elizabeth married Howard Lennon Johnson in 1948 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and enjoyed 52 years of marriage before Howard's passing in 2000. She was an active long time parishioner of St. James Catholic Church. A highlight of her faith journey was a pilgrimage to the Shrine at Lourdes, France with her family. Elizabeth graduated from the University of Georgia where she studied Psychology and was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, for which she became a sponsoring alumnus. Besides family, Elizabeth's great passion and vocation was as an educator in Savannah's parochial elementary schools, first at Cathedral Day School, and then over three decades at St. James Catholic School. A generation of her former students fondly remembers Mrs. Johnson. Among Elizabeth's many interests and activities were golf, computers, gardening, her love of animals, and genealogy. A member of the Daughters of Ireland, she once traveled to that country to explore the home of her Prendergast and Maguire ancestors. Visitation will be Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 4-6 p.m., at Fairhaven Funeral Home - Hubert C. Baker Chapel, with a Rosary Service at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Hubert C. Baker Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2011 at St. James Catholic Church, with Father David, officiating. Interment: will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.
