HINSDALE, N.H. -- Eleanor Florence (Steams) Smith, 90, of School Street, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2005, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health. She was born March 24, 1914, in Hinsdale, the daughter of Clifford and Florence (O'Neal) Steams. A lifelong resident of Hinsdale, she attended Monument School in Hinsdale, Green Street School in Brattleboro and graduated from Brattleboro High School, class of 1931. On Sept. 19, 1942, she married Orson G. Smith. Mr. Smith died Feb. 28, 1997. Mrs. Smith was Town Clerk in Hinsdale for 51 years from 1938 until 1989. She attended every Hinsdale Town Meeting from 1938-2001. She and her husband owned the Colton Insurance Agency in Hinsdale and Hinsdale Fuel Co. for many years. She was a member of Wantastiquet Grange #133 in Hinsdale, the Women's Fellowship of the First Congregational Church of Hinsdale, and the Hinsdale Historical Society. She enjoyed local history, gardening, knitting, crocheting, and her pets. She is survived by a son, Edwin 0. “Smokey” Smith and his wife, Sharron, of Hinsdale; a brother, Bernard C. Steams of Fort Edward, N.Y.; two grandsons: Dwight Smith of Hinsdale and Jason Smith of Hillsborough; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy LaChance. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Hinsdale. Burial will be in the spring in Pine Grove Cemetery in Hinsdale. Friends are invited to call at MAX E.
