Eleanor Mason Nicholson Smith, age 100, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Florence.Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Scott Smith, and her sisters, Peggy Higgins and Nan Alexander, both of England.She is survived by her daughter, Ethel Born in Northumberland, England, in 1901, Eleanor Smith came to America with her husband, Ralph Scott Smith, in November 1929. Moving to Florence in 1942, Eleanor Smith became an active member of the Womans Work of the First United Methodist Church. She served in leadership positions at the district and conference levels of the United Methodist Church. She will be remembered by many people as a choir member, as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the Official Board of Stewards.In 1988, Eleanor was honored by the entire congregation, celebrating her lifetime of service to the United Methodist Church. The family of Eleanor Smith has been associated with the Methodist church from its earliest beginnings in England during the time of John Wesley. Additionally, Eleanor was an active member of the National Federation of Music Clubs and a member of numerous book clubs. She delighted friends with her wonderful book reviews delivered in her inimitable English accent.The funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m., with the family receiving friends in the church parlor from 10 a.m.The Rev. Leonard McDowell and Dr. James Basham will lead the service.Pallbearers will be Nicholas Cooke, William Cadenhead, Jim Graham, Leon Graham, Dr. David Mussleman, Dr. Ranel Spence.Elkins Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
