MACDONALD, Douglas "DK" Keith May 9, 1926 - October 7, 2011 Born on May 9, 1926 in Saskatoon, Keith slipped away peacefully surrounded by his family, at UBC Hospital on Friday, October 7, 2011. Predeceased by brothers Ralph and Bill and sister Audrey, he will be dearly missed by his wife of 61 years, Gwynneth, his sister Eleanor, his five children (and their spouses): Ian (Wendy), Max (Karen), Andrew (Georgina), Maggie (Carl) and Cam (Paulina), and his eleven grandchildren: Jason, Josh, Mairi, Griff, Kenzie, Garde, David, Schuyler, Rosie, Emory and Mila. After completing his Bachelor of Science at UBC, Keith received his Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina in 1950, and went on to work in Borneo and Formosa (Taiwan) for the World Health Organization. He returned to UBC to earn his medical degree in 1960 and practised as a family doctor in the Dunbar area from 1962 until 2004. Keith also taught medical students at UBC, becoming a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine in 1990. A consummate athlete, Keith was a highly skilled rugby and football player. He played rugby at a national level and was drafted to the CFL, choosing to go to medical school instead. Keith sailed all his life, showing an uncanny ability to encounter both charted and uncharted rocks. Sports and socializing often combined for Keith, who was a lifelong member of the Meraloma Club and an enthusiastic squash player at the Vancouver Racquets Club. A good gambler, he liked to bet the ponies, was always up for a poker game, and in his later years spent many happy hours working on "his football picks". Keith was of a vanishing breed of family doctors, delivering countless babies, looking after several generations of individual families, making house calls right up until he retired. He truly loved children and was a baby magnet, a tall man completely at ease with the little ones. Keith had a presence, and all who met him knew him to be a caring, gentle and humble soul-he was a man of integrity and grace. Keith cared for so many people in his life, and his family would like to thank all the loving individuals who did the same for him in his final years. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 2490 W. 37th Ave on Friday, October 28th 2011 at 2 pm. A Celebration of Keith's Life will follow at the Marine Drive Golf Club, 7425 Yew St at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the "D. Keith MacDonald Scholarship in Family Medicine" at UBC; memorial.supporting.ubc.ca/dr-d- keith-macdonald/ or call 604 827-4111 or 1-877-717-4483.
