David "D." Larry Smith of Alpharetta, husband of Patricia, passed away suddenly Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Born on June 9, 1936, to the late Martin Luther (Trigger) and Nellie Mae Smith in Gainesville, Larry married his high school sweetheart, Pat, in September of 1956 and remained devoted to her for his lifetime. Known as "papa" to his six grandchildren, Daniel, Michael, Erin, Caitlin, Megan, and Taylor, Larry was a jack-of-all-trades from starring as a sheriff in home movies to installing shelving to etiquette lessons and much more.Larry was a successful insurance executive with Metropolitan Life for 37 years and he continued his insurance career into retirement as a consultant for MetLife. Larry was a Million Dollar Round Table Member, President's Conference Chairman, Leaders Conference Qualifier, and earned hundreds of other awards due to his strong and persistent work ethic. As a result of his time spent with MetLife, he was a lifelong fan of Snoopy, and always sent Snoopy cards.He never met a stranger and loved to entertain his family and friends with "A Touch of Class." Larry was full of enthusiasm, upbeat, charmingly polite, and would do anything for you. He gathered and kept friendships from childhood for a lifetime, and he was a genuine friend. Larry's legacy continues on in the lives of his children, David and Tricia, as well as his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He made a difference in peoples' lives and will be missed.Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Gainesville. The family will receive friends Friday at 6 p.m. also at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
