Carter, David E.David E. Carter 89, of Advent Christian Village Dowling Park, Florida went home to be with his Lord March 15, 2013. He was born August 19, 1923 in Oswego, NY where he grew up on the shores of Lake Ontario. Dave graduated from Cornell University's School of Civil Engineering and joined the Army/Air Corps in June, 1944. He served in the U.S., then in Frankfurt, Germany with the Occupation Forces until he was honorably discharged on July 4, 1946. Dave and his sweetheart, Mary Meter were married on September 14, 1946. They lived in Elmira, NY for 52 years and raised four children. Dave was employed first by American Bridge, then spent 30 years with the Fudge & Underhill Architects & Engineers firm. He finished out the last 16 years of his career consulting for the Elmira School District as "clerk of the works." Dave received numerous honors during his career, as well as recognition for his volunteer work with the Boy Scouts. Dave played on league volleyball and bowling teams until recent years. He enjoyed swimming, gardening, photography, and collecting stamps and coins. Dave and Mary enjoyed traveling to over 60 countries, and often distributed Bibles in the local languages. Their favorite trip was to the Holy Land in 1975 where they were baptized in the Jordan. In 1998 Dave & Mary moved to Ocala, FL to finally retire, later they moved to Advent Christian Village on their 65th wedding anniversary, September 14, 2011. Dave was hospitalized in Feb 2012, and spent the last 13 months as a resident of Good Samaritan nursing home. Dave is survived by his wife Mary and three daughters, Martha Drake (Bruce) of Painted Post, NY, Joan Purdy (Rich) of Downingtown, PA and Marilyn Derksen (Rick) of Seattle, WA; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and brother-in-law, Warren Meter. Dave is preceded by parents, Lillian & Earl Carter, sister, Doris Carter and son, Warren Carter. Dave asked to be remembered this way: "He loved the Lord, his wife and family and was happy with the life he had lived." A Memorial Service was held in Florida on March 23, 2013.
