Betty Carico Williams passed away on March 24, 2013, at Athens Regional Medical Center, in Athens. Betty was born on April 11, 1932, in Galax, Va., to William Dewey Carico and Hazel Jones Carico. She grew up in Galax, and after attending high school there, she attended Radford College, in Radford, Va., where she received a degree in art education. After college, Betty held various teaching positions before starting a family, and eventually applied her educational background and personal talents to every aspect of her life.Betty married Floyd Wendell "Wen" Williams, in Blacksburg, Va., on December 20, 1952. They were happily married for over 60 years. Betty enjoyed travel with her husband, Wen, visiting nearly every European country and cultivating friendships in many others.Betty was a patron of the Classic Center Foundation and the Athens Symphony Orchestra. Throughout her life, Betty cultivated a broad range of interests and talents. She was known by her friends and family as a gifted artist, gardener, interior designer, cook, sewing expert, and floral arranger. Her contributions were widely known; her talents were often on display in the form of floral arrangements, food, and artistic decorating of her home and the homes of others. Betty's good cheer and generosity were boundless. Socially active and selfless of her time and energy, Betty's skills enhanced many major events in the lives of her friends and family.At home, Betty's lifelong passion for gardening was central to her daily life, and from 1996 until 2012, she worked tirelessly to complete her vision for a full English garden at her home in the Five Points area. Betty was also intellectually curious, consuming dozens of books each year to pursue her interests in current affairs, politics, history, and culture. Betty loved and cared for her family over five generations, as a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Known affectionately by her grandchildren as "Mama Betty," she traveled frequently to graduations, weddings, and birthdays, as an active and generous matriarch of her growing family.Betty is survived by her spouse, Wen Williams; son, Dale Williams, and daughter-in-law, Sabrina Young Willliams, of Kiawah Island, S.C.; daughter, Dana Williams, of Bozeman, Mont.; granddaughter, Lindsey Williams Drath, grandson-in-law, Ethan Drath, and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Drath, of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Whitney Williams Cole, and grandson-in-law, Charles Cole III, of Charleston, S.C.; grandson, Cameron Williams, of New York City; and grandson, Kenneth Kansky, of Union City, Calif.A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at the chapel of Lord & Stephens West. The Rev. Paul Baxley will officiate at the memorial. Following the memorial service, a reception for friends and relatives will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Trumps, 2026 South Milledge Avenue, Athens.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.
