<!-- FH = Florida Memorial Funeral Home -->Betty Doak Smith, 95, passed away on June 13, 2011 at The Place on Merritt Island where she had resided for 12 years. She is survived by daughter, Mary Katherine (Cassie) Wentworth; sons, Gerald (Jerry) Smith, and James (Jim) L. Smith, Jr.; four grandchildren, Katherine Suzanne Petty, James L. Smith III, Christopher Wentworth and Michael O'Donnell; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, James L. Smith, predeceased her in 1998.Betty was born in St. Louis, Missouri to William and Jesse Doak. Her father, Bill, was a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers for some 16 years and retired in the early thirties to Bradenton, Florida where Betty graduated from high school. She began working for the Life Insurance Company of Georgia in Daytona where she met and married her husband, James (Smitty) L. Smith.She and Smitty had resided in Cocoa since 1939. While her husband continued working for Life of Georgia, he was involved in Cocoa's city government as city councilman and mayor in the late 50's and early 60's. Betty was devoted to raising her children in a loving and caring home. She was always involved and present at their athletic activities from the time they were youngsters through high school.She was an avid duplicate bridge player, playing in many tournaments at the county, state, and national level. She continued playing bridge until a few years prior to her passing. She achieved the level of Silver Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. Betty enjoyed painting and sewing and the mental challenges of crossword puzzles and scrabble on a daily basis. She was not adverse to taking a piece of new or old clothing, ripping it apart and remaking it to her liking.Betty will not only be be missed by her family, but also by her close friend and companion, Trevor Dunham, who has been a resident at The Place for a number of years. They enjoyed many hours of companionship through their conversations, meals, card and scrabble games and watching movies together.Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at Florida Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday, June 17th. A visitation will be held from 2:30 - 3:30 followed by a memorial service at 3:30 and interment.In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty's memory may be made to Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice, 8060 Spyglass Hill Road, Viera, FL 32940.
