Mrs. Betty Gail Gunter (Elizabeth Abigail Parker Gunter) died on Oct. 6, 2011. She resided at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville. She was born on July 22, 1924, in Manhattan, Kan. She grew up in Manhattan and Milwaukee, Wis. She graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and attended Tobe-Coburn School of Design in New York City. She met William Barrett Gunter (Bill), stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., near Manhattan. After World War II, they married on June 7, 1946, in The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City.Betty Gail and Bill moved to Gainesville, where they lived for 40 years. Following Bill's appointment to the Georgia Supreme Court by then-Gov. Jimmy Carter, they also resided at Colony Square in Atlanta from 1975-1986. Betty Gail was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was active in the Quinlan Art Center and attended First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. She was an artist who shared her talents in many ways. She enjoyed painting mountain and beach landscapes, portraits, unique collage pieces and still-life. Her work was shown in Gainesville and Atlanta. Many friends are proud to have an original painting in their home. Betty Gail was a talented needlepoint artist. Her works were made into decorative pillows and stool covers. Betty Gail was an interior designer as well. She had numerous clients in Gainesville and Atlanta. Betty Gail and her mother, Mardie, passed on their love of cooking to her children, Gay, Barrett and John. She was very proud of her Scottish heritage.She is survived by her children, Marjorie Gay Gunter of Franklin, Tenn., and William Barrett Gunter of Durham, N.C. Her grandchildren are Barrett Roudabush, William Roudabush, Kathryn Gunter and Bennett Gunter. She is predeceased by her parents, John Huntington Parker and Marjorie Marchbank Parker; brother, John Marchbank Parker; husband, William Barrett Gunter (Bill); and son, John Huntington Gunter.A service of thanksgiving to honor the life of Betty Gail will be held on Oct. 15, at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. Visitation will be held in the Sweetenberg Fellowship Hall after the service. Also, a service will be held at 4 p.m. at McGill-Scarbrough Chapel at Lanier Village Estates followed by a reception in the auditorium the same day. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 800 South Enota Drive, Gainesville, GA, 30501, or The Quinlan Art Center, 514 Green St. NE, Gainesville, GA. 30501.
