AGNES HARLAND Agnes Harland of Emo, Ont. passed away at home Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 after a courageous struggle with health problems. Agnes lived a full life; she was quick to express her many blessings, and was able to enjoy her 90th birthday on Jan. 1, 2000. Agnes was an exceptional woman. She treasured her childhood as one of seven children in a loving farming family in the rolling hills of Saskatchewan. As a child, she was encouraged to take on challenges. As a young woman, she excelled as a university science student and was a keen sports enthusiast. She played baseball, women’s hockey, and curled throughout her life. Agnes was a progressive thinker with own political and social passions; she was always reaching out to the hurting and marginalized. Agnes met Wesley, her life partner, at United College in Winnipeg, Man. and they were married in 1934. Together they worked very hard, giving their time and many talents to the ministry in the United Church, to the communities where they lived, and to loving and unselfishly caring for their five children. They served churches in Rivers, Briercrest, Foxwarren, Austin, Emo, Island Lake, and Keewatin. Agnes was involved in youth leadership and directed several church camps for teenage girls. Agnes continues as a family role model for her son, Ian (Donna); daughter, Elaine Frazer; daughter, Janet Loney (Dave); son, Hartley (Grace); and daughter, Lorna Bruchkowski (Phil); and to 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She knew joy and fulfilment in sharing with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren her deep appreciation of nature and playing cards and board games (chess, Scrabble, etc.) Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Wesley; her parents, Mary and John Lee; two brothers; four sisters; and two sons-in-law. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Emo. In lieu of flowers, im memoriam gifts may be made to World Development and Relief Fund of United Church of Canada, c/o Knox United Church, Box 390, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.
