MONTPELIER - Adera Joan White, 89, of Wheelock Street, Montpelier, died at her home Friday, July 10, 2009. She was born in East Barre on Oct. 5, 1919, the daughter of Ernesto and Ambrogina Locarno.She received her education in Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1937. She later attended the former Heaton Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in the Class of 1940.She married Harry W. White on Nov. 28, 1940, in Montpelier .She served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Adera was an instructor of nursing while stationed in Sioux Falls , S.D., and served as a nurse with the rank of lieutenant in the Philippines until she was discharged at the end of the war.She later worked at the former Heaton Hospital in Montpelier and several years as the school nurse at Montpelier High School in the 1960s, '70s and early '80s.Adera was a member of the VFW #792 Post & Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Post #3. She enjoyed playing golf and bingo.She is survived by her husband, Harry, of Montpelier and son, Timothy E. White, of Montpelier; and several nieces and nephews.A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Berlin Corners Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
