Ada Whitaker - Rockledge - Ada Whitaker died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 2009 in Rockledge. It was fitting that one of her daughters, a granddaughter, and friends were holding her hands and singing some of her favorite hymns at her bedside; she loved music. Ada was born in 1915 in Dearborn County, IN. She married Blaine Whitaker in 1934 and raised her four children in Barberton, Ohio. She and Blaine moved to Florida in 1962, first living in Hialeah and moving to Merritt Island in 1976. Ada was a musician, entertaining friends and family singing and playing the guitar. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island where she sang with the choir for many years. Ada loved creating and for many years crocheted numerous handmade heirlooms and quilted baby pillows and quilts that children all over the U.S. and several foreign countries have grown up with. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007 after 73 years of marriage. She leaves a large family behind her; daughters, Carol Larsen in Hialeah and Susan Hatfield in Rockledge; sons, Blaine Whitaker, Jr. in Barberton, Ohio and John Robert Whitaker in Austin TX. Her family was the most important part of her life and she has been blessed with 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Calling hours are Sunday, November 1st, 1 - 2 p.m. with services following at Wylie-Baxley Merritt Island Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice.
