WILLIAMS, Willie Mae Mattier Caldwell, of Tampa, went to be with the Lord March 14, 2009. The World War II Women' s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) veteran died after a brief illness. Williams was born October 23, 1912, in Archer, Fla., and raised in Tampa. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, in 1933, and worked as a domestic, until she enlisted in the WAAC, in 1942. She was a U.S. Army cook from 1943 to 1945, when she ended her military career. Then, Williams attend schools, in New York. In 1949, she was employed by Cleveland Post Office as a distribution clerk, a job she held until she retired, in 1972. Williams was a Legionnaire for more than 60 years. Twice, she had the honor of becoming the first female commander of an all-male American Legion Post, Cleveland Post 94, and Carmichael-Legree Post 167. In 1989, Williams founded the Women' s Army Corps Veterans Association (WACVA) of Tampa Bay Chapter 88. She served in dozens of civic groups and national organizations, and served many groups as president. Her artifacts and recordings are in the U.S. Library of Congress, Florida State University Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, Jackson Library University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Robert W. Sanders Sr. Public Library. She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories more than 200 cousins, and many friends. There will be a viewing at 6 p.m. March 20, at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Ave. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. March 21, at Zion Lutheran Church, 2901 N. Highland Ave. Arrangements are entrusted to Ray Williams Funeral Home.
