William Van Horn SchenectadyWilliam Ernie Van Horn passed away on November 7th at the age of 87. Ernie was a lifelong resident of Schenectady. He retired from the Schenectady Police Department with 37 years of faithful service in 1988. For part of his 37 years as a patrolman he was a motorcycle officer. One of the duties he enjoyed was leading the Christmas parade, while driving his motorcycle with the side car. His next motorcycle was a three wheeler. Everyone thinks this was his favorite because it came with a trunk. Of course, Ernie still had his Police helmet and motorcycle boots. Ernie retired while in the traffic division. As Ernie would say I never had a bad day. Ernie's artistic side evolved while living at Ellis. In 2011, he entered his first art contest and took 3rd place with his entry Ted E. Bear in the 2011 NYAHSA Art Exhibit. Ernie continued to draw, paint and enjoy his Yankees. As everyone knows, he was a devoted son and brother. He is predeceased by his mother, Alice Marie (Giroux) Van Horn; father, William Frances Van Horn; his sister, Alice Parks; and former wife, Marie Van Horn. He is survived by his daughter Suzanne and her husband Rick; and his extended family Andrea, Kloie and Sam Riggins and Vicki Vessells. Ernie lived at the Ellis Residential and Rehab Center for the last six years of his life. Andrea and Vicki brought joy and happiness into his life and they were his friends. The staff at Ellis Residential Center was also part of his extended family. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union Street, with Rev. Richard A. Carlino, officiating. Interment to follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Jones Funeral Home Monday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave, Scotia, NY 12302.
