BAR HARBOR - William "Bill" Thomas Howarth III, 63, died Feb. 5, 2008, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. He was born Oct. 25, 1944, in Alexandria, Va., the son of William Thomas and Grace E. (Harrell) Howarth II. He graduated from the University of Maryland. Bill worked as an aeronautical engineer for three decades with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut, where he was manager for compressor design for all their large engines. He later transitioned to serve as the head of the design team for AmericaOne, representing United Technologies syndicate in the 2000 America's Cup race. His passion was sailing, and after spending summers in Bar Harbor since the 1970s, 10 years ago, he and his wife, moved to Mount Desert Island. Here, Bill started his own boat building business, Dauntless Enterprises, Bar Harbor. He was especially proud of his designs for the Thomas Bay 16 and 19. Bill was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Ellsworth. He enjoyed music and was a self-taught violinist. He is survived by his mother, Grace E. Harrell of Blue Hill; his beloved wife of 41 years, Georgia (Shaw) Howarth; one son, Mark Andrew Howarth and wife, Bernadette, of New Jersey; two daughters, Christina L. and husband, Bryan Hickey, of Connecticut, and Laurie A. and husband, Richard Sanford, of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren, Izzabella, Gabriel, Olivia, Liam, Tuesday, Mercedes and Sinjin. Bill will also by missed by his dog, Missy; and cat, Pippi. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.
