The service will be at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday at New Bethel AME Church in Monticello. Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. EDT today at Cooks & Cooper Funeral Home in Madison (850-973-6666).W.T. Grant III departed this life Sunday at Capital Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 16, 1933, in New Orleans, the third child and one of twin sons of the late Warren Grant Sr. and Thelma R. Grant. William Thomas, as he was affectionately called, was a native of New Orleans and had resided in Mobile, Ala., Madison, Atlanta and Monticello.He was baptized at birth and accepted Christ at the early age of 7 at State Street AME Church in Mobile. He served as a steward at Mount Zion No. 1 AME Church in Madison and as a deacon at Shiloh AME Church in Madison until he moved to Atlanta. William Thomas received his early education in New Orleans and Mobile.He received a B.S. in music education from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Ala., with further studies toward a master's degree at Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach. William Thomas was an avid lover of music and enjoyed being an entrepreneur. From 1954 to 1965 he was the band director for Carter Parramore in Quincy, Madison Training School in Madison, Suwannee Training School in Live Oak and Starke Training School in Starke.From 1966 to 1979 he owned and operated William Thomas Grant Tenneco and Amoco service stations in Madison. From 1979 to 1983 he was a math teacher at Madison County High School. From 1983 to 1992 he owned and operated William Thomas Grant and Son Amoco in Madison. From 1992 to 1998 he founded and operated Grant's Service Center, Wrecker Service and Bill Grant Enterprises in Monticello.He had semi-retired since 2002. William Thomas never met a stranger. He loved people and would carry on a conversation with anyone. He married Esther Tolliver on Dec. 23, 1962, after a brief courtship. They were blessed with two children. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Esther Grant; a son, William Thomas Grant IV (and wife Kimberly) of Monticello; a daughter, Adrienne Grant Smith (and husband Leon) of Monticello; a brother, Dr. Warren Grant, M.D. (and wife Theresa) of Rockville, Md.; four grandchildren, Kendell Grant, Carmen Grant, Kimberly Grant and Leon "L.J" Smith Jr., all of Monticello; two brothers-in-law, Frank Tolliver of Montgomery and Booker T. Taylor Sr. (and wife Deloris) of Mobile; a sister-in-law, Bernice Skelton of Monticello; two goddaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
