William S. "Bill" Heath, born Oct. 1, 1921, in Portsmouth, Va., passed away on March 17, 2013, at home from complications with a blood clot. Bill moved from Newport News, Va., after 31 years, to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1972. He worked with the design team on the first nuclear Aircraft Carrier (U.S.S. Enterprise) CVN 65 and transferred in 1972 to Offshore Power System Plant for the design of a floating nuclear power plant as the piping/mechanical design manager. Bill retired in 1982 and continued to make Jacksonville, Fla., his home. Bill was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Wilkes-Barre CL-I03 in the Pacific from 1944 till discharged in 1946. Bill was a member of First United Methodist Church of Newport News, Va., and a member of Arlington United Methodist Church. Bill loved the game of tennis and served 10 years on the tennis committee and board of directors at the Arlington YMCA. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rose Heath; his sisters, Elaine Leary and Margie Stuck, all of Portsmouth, Va.; and brother-in-law William Frizzell of Apopka, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Evelyn; his daughters, Linda Sykes (Mike) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Judy Barlow (Richard) of Elkton, Fla. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Annette Adkins (Todd) of Kenosha, Wis., and Brad Sykes (Josephina) of North Hollywood, Calif.; his step-grandchildren, Stacy Masciarelli (Paul) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Brian Barlow (Marie) of Jacksonville; six great-grandchildren; and nine nephews and nieces. The family would like to give thanks to Dr. Signor and Dr. Jean Harris for their care, as well as thanks to Haven Hospice and Home Instead for their constant presence. Bill will be missed for his sense of humor and loving family ways. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Arlington United Methodist Church, 1400 N. University Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32211. Interment at a later date will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill"s name to Haven Hospice, 200 Southpark Blvd,, Suite 207, St. Augustine, FL 32086. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
