1929-2013 GARDINER - William Richard "Bill" Rogers, 85, of Gardiner, passed away Feb. 22 after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born Jan. 4, 1929, in Gardiner. He was a lifelong Gardiner resident. Bill was the son of William E. Rogers and Thelma Dill Rogers. Bill worked in the family business, Rogers Construction, and completed many major projects throughout New England. He also worked in the logging business spending many years in Carrabasset Valley and Sugarloaf Mountain. In his retirement years, Bill did carpentry and woodworking as a hobby and as a business, making many heirloom pieces that will be enjoyed for future generations. He also loved his years at Kents Hill School renovating and upgrading the facilities there. He was an avid outdoorsman, and took many trips to Colorado, hunting elk and exploring. He loved fishing and camping, and after retirement, he and his wife, Gloria, traveled the United States in their truck camper. In his younger years, he and Gloria and their kids were very involved in archery and belonged to the Tri-City Fish and Game. During this time he won the title of Men's Maine State Archery Champion. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Gloria Lovejoy Rogers; a son, Stephen Rogers, and his fiancee, Christine Poulson, of Belgrade; and two daughters, Brenda Kaler and her fiance, Barry Cote, of West Gardiner, and Kathy Dwyer and her husband, Bob, of Milford, Mass. He has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, whom he adored, Jennifer Kaler and children Riley and Mason True, Stacey Kaler, Melissa (Condon) and Eddie Varteresian and their children, Mia and Matthew, and Brett Condon and his wife, Stacy, and children Nicholas and Shelly. He is also survived by his sisters, Patty Feilen, and her husband, Otto, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Shirley Elliot, of Ogunquit; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; and younger brother Norman "Brother" Rogers A time of visiting will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Meals on Wheels c/o Spectrum Generations, 22 Town Farm Road, Hallowell, ME 04347.
