CARTER, Captain William John - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William John Carter on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 following a thankfully brief battle with cancer. Bill was the beloved husband of Lorna Thompson, loving father of Shanen and Erin, and caring grandfather to Audrey, Zachary and Vanessa. He was predeceased by his sister Ann Robinson. He will be dearly missed by his extended family: Penny Thompson, Christopher Thompson, Sophia Thompson, Jeff Dickson and Jennifer Hart. Bill was born and raised in Toronto and served proudly with the North York Fire Department and the Toronto Fire Service for 36 years. He was a father figure to countless individuals both on and off duty. He lived life to the fullest; he never declined an opportunity to meet new friends; he never said no when asked a favour. He loved to socialize over cards, Dominos, Scrabble or a beer. As Bill approached retirement he continued to develop new interests including an appreciation and enjoyment for travelling and, most recently, sailing. The Carter family would like to express our sincerest thanks to Dr. Andrew Dueck for his care, compassion and respect during Bill's last days at Sunnybrook Hospital. Family and friends will be received at the SCOTT FUNERAL HOME 'Brampton Chapel', 289 Main Street North, Brampton (905-451-1100) on Tuesday, May 26 from 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the chapel at 1 p.m. If desired, donations can be made to the Firefighter Cancer Research Fund at Princess Margaret Hospital.
