William J. DeVoti Sr., 87, of Lake Como, N.J., a former resident of Montclair, N.J., passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, N.J. 07719, and then on TUESDAY from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Catholic Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of The Immaculate Conception, 30 N. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield. For further information or to send condolences to the family, please visit www.obrienfuneralhome.com. Born and raised in Newark, Mr. DeVoti was a 1942 graduate of St. Michael's High School, where he was class president and captain of the baseball and basketball teams. He later resided in Bloomfield and then Montclair for 31 years before moving to Lake Como in 1996. He was an avid sports fan, a bowler and enjoyed woodworking projects and creating custom cabinetry. Mr. DeVoti was a proud US Army veteran of World War II, and a Silver Star recipient, serving in the 122nd Signal Radio Intelligence Company through five campaigns, commencing with the invasion of North Africa and culminating with the surrender of the German Army in Italy. Upon his return, he was employed by the Gumm Chemical Company in Kearny. He retired as vice president of manufacturing in 1985. Mr. DeVoti was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Annabelle McGlynn DeVoti, and his son, George W. DeVoti. Surviving are his devoted children, Suzanne Fitzgerald of Wall, N.J.; Marlene Fetterly of Bloomfield, N.J.; Jacquelyn DeVoti of Lake Como; William DeVoti of Neptune, N.J.; Mark and wife, Jean DeVoti, of Cranford; Denise Sperrazza and husband, Michael, of Essex Fells, N.J., and Matthew and wife, Laura DeVoti, of North Caldwell, N.J.; his sister, Priscilla Fara of Spring, Texas; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either St. Anne's Villa (Sisters of Charity), 190 Park Ave., Florham Park, N.J. 07932, or the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kan. 66675-8516.
