Lee, William DaleMay 10, 1924 - Nov. 21, 2008William Dale "Mr. Bill" Lee, 84, of Clayton, Ala., died Nov. 21, 2008, at Medical Center Barbour after a sudden illness. Visitation for Mr. Lee will be from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kent Funeral Home in Clayton. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Sarasota, and memorialization will be by cremation.Born May 10, 1924, in Allenville, Ill., Mr. Lee was the son of the late Henry and Della Wickiser Lee. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the South Pacific. He was an aircraft mechanic and later became a pilot in the Army Air Corps. He was a retired teacher and coached several sports in the Sarasota school system for 45 years. He was a professional umpire with the professional rookie league in Florida. He served as head of the league for many years. Mr. Lee was administrative director and an icon of the amateur circus, the Sarasota Sailor Circus, for 38 years. The circus is a part of the Sarasota County School System and is world renown. Mr. Lee was a great influence on many people's lives. Mr. Lee and his wife, Betty, lived in Clayton, Ala., since 2000, coming from Sarasota. He was a member of the Clayton Lions Club and retained his membership with the American Legion in Sarasota.Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Lee, Clayton, Ala.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Dottie and Bud Lang, Biloxi, Miss., and Terrie Minter, Sarasota; four grandchildren, Chris Lee, Ray Minter, David Minter and Erik Minter; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.The family suggest in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Sarasota Sailor Circus, 2075 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota, FL 34239.
