AUBURN, N.Y. Wendy Smith, loved and remembered by so many, born April 5, 1955, a resident of Auburn for the past 17 years, died at the age of 48 on October 11, 2003 due to complications from cancer. Wendy grew up on a dairy farm in the small town of Knox, N.Y. She was very active in high school, she played the flute, was the Albany County Dairy Princess and was the prom queen her senior year. Upon graduating from Berne-Knox Central, she attended nurses training at Springfield Medical Center, Ma. After graduating with a diploma in nursing, she worked many years alternating between critical care nursing and chemical dependency. In 1980, Wendy moved to Walnut Creek, Calif. and met her husband of 19 years, Gary Smith. In 1984, she graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga with a BA in health services administration. After moving to Auburn in 1986, Wendy enjoyed raising her two children, Jessica 16 and Spencer 13. She was active in their school activities and especially loved gardening, her golden retrievers and hosting Thanksgivings with her family. Below is a special message from Wendy. Dear Cherished Friends, In the summer of 1999, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This diagnosis altered my life and the lives of so many of my friends and family. It has been a long journey with many twist and turns for us all. It was a period of my life that showed me the love and generosity of this community. It was a time that showed me a richer meaning to life. There were old friends, and new friends, and people that I never had the chance to meet. All reaching out to me and my family to provide support and love when it was needed. It was the purest example of people living lives of love. With each day it has brought me closer to my family, to my friends and closer to God. The power of prayer is incredible. I couldn't believe all the people that told me they were praying for me. I know in my heart that every one of those prayers were heard. I know your generous time and prayer has given me additional time I would not have had. I have cherished the extra time given me to enjoy my memories with family and friends. There are so many of you I have not had the opportunity to thank for the many meals, flowers, and cards you have sent. Your kindness will never be forgotten. For everything you have done, I thank you. May God Bless You Always, Wendy Kendall-Smith Wendy is survived by her husband, Gary Smith; her daughter, Jessica and son Spencer, which are the pride and joy of her life; her sisters, Susan Schanz and husband Duncan of Knox, N.Y., Dawn Moran and husband Joe of Alameda, Calif., Deborah Marroquin of San Diego; and her adored brother, Norman Kendall of Auburn; beloved sister-in-law, Jane Gilbert of Santa Cruz, Calif.; nieces, nephews and great-nieces. Those wishing to honor the memory of Wendy in celebration of her life are welcome to attend services at the Sonrise Church on Thursday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m. Wendy had tremendous compassion and support from her Auburn Cancer Support Group led by Dr. Jon Hake. She would like any contributions to go to the Sutter Auburn Faith Foundation for this group.
