PRESQUE ISLE - Wendell M. Carter, 73, passed away April 23, 2009, at a Presque Isle Nursing Home. He was born Nov. 24, 1935, in Presque Isle, the only son of John and Lula (Merrit) Carter. He was a member of Presque Isle Wesleyan Church. Wendell worked for many years as a long haul truck driver where he was known as "French Fry" and as a farmer. He loved the company of others and enjoyed socializing at the hotel or having lunch in Mapleton. Loving a good conversation, Wendell also enjoyed debating with his friends and always had fun in their discussions together. Wendell is survived by his loving wife, Marcelyn (Shaw) Carter; as well as two daughters and their husbands, Vickie Carter Dean and Russell Dean of Virginia Beach, Va., and Robyn Carter York and Joseph L. York of Mapleton; five grandchildren, Derrick, Danny and Chris Dean, Kathleen and Holly York; and one great-granddaughter, Moira Elsbeth Dean. A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Southside Cemetery, West Chapman, with Pastor Larry Palmer officiating.
