BARTOW -- Mr. Wayne Williams, who was athletic in his younger years, dedicated his time volunteering with the Special Olympics for the last couple of years. "He worked with the children up in Orlando," said his daughter, Carrie Williams Bircheat of Winter Haven. She described her father as a big-hearted, laid-back, giving man. The customer services representative for Publix died of liver failure Friday (April 7, 2006) in Lakeland. He was 58. He was born in Haines City on Oct. 16, 1947, and attended schools in Haines City, where he played football, baseball and basketball. "He got a scholarship for basketball in college to the University of Florida," Bircheat said. Mr. Williams had been employed at Publix, working parttime for the last three years. He was an Army Reserve veteran. He attended First Baptist Church of Haines City. In addition to his daughter, Carrie Williams Bircheat, Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of five years, Diane Williams; stepsons, Thomas Taylor Jr. and Nathaniel Stanley, both of Apopka; stepdaughter, Jennifer Stanley, Apopka; brothers, Lindsey Williams, Winter Haven, Keith Williams, Astatula, and Dale Williams, Haines City; mother, Hazel Carter Williams; and four grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Inwood Baptist Church in Winter Haven. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hepatitis C Foundation. Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City.
