Walter T. Powell, 87, of Rockwood, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013 at home.He was a well known wood carver and bluegrass/gospel musician. A U.S. Army veteran and he was of the Baptist faith.Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Annie Powell; and brother, Leland Powell.He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mona Watson Powell of Rockwood; sons, Stanley Powell of Rockwood and Terry Powell (Stacy) of Kingston; twin grandchildren, Ginger Powell and Suzanne Best (Travis) of Lenoir City; sisters-in-law, Irene Helton of Oakdale, Dot Summers of Oakdale, Gladys Dalton (Jim) of Harriman; and June Horton (Bobby) of Oakdale; devoted friends, Gene Lawson and Freida Grant of Rockwood; sister-in-law, Jimmie Jean Booth of Rockwood; nephew, Roger Powell; niece, Elizabeth Futtrell; and several other nieces and nephews.The family received friends Monday, April 1, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Evans Mortuary. Funeral service followed with Rev.'s Shawn Durham and Chuck Wilburn officiating. Interment was held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Pine Orchard Cemetery with military honors by the Roane County Military Honor Guard.Evans Mortuary, Rockwood was in charge of arrangements.
