OAKLAND -- Walter J. Powell, 69, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 31, 2013, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville.He was born in Waterville on Sept. 8, 1943, the son of Alan and Grace (Heath) Powell. Walter attended Oakland schools. He married Rosalie J. Quimby in 1961; they just celebrated their 52nd anniversary.Walter was formerly employed by Tukey's Sawmill, Asplundh Tree Services and drove trucks for the town of Oakland before becoming disabled in 1985.He loved to fish and hunt with his family and friends, as well as playing guitar and singing music.Walter was predeceased by two sons, Scott A. Powell and Carl E. Powell, along with his father, Alan Powell, and two brothers, Robert Powell and Ted Powell. Surviving are his loving wife Rosalie J. Powell, five children, Walter D. Powell and his wife, Linda, of Skowhegan, Brian L. Powell and his wife, Sandra, of Oakland, Sandra J. Hayden and her husband, Patrick, of Knox, Wanda L. Welman and her husband, Gene, of Oakland, and Anthony R. Powell and Kim, of Norridgewock, three brothers, Herman, William, and John Powell, one sisters Nancy, 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hospice Volunteers of Waterville for their support during Walter's illness.Friends are invited to visit noon to 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Lewis Cemetery in Oakland.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the funeral home.
