Vivian Manning Smith, widow of Ellison D. Smith Jr., died at her home, 109 Patrick Drive, July 13, 2003.Born in Greenville in 1923, she was the daughter of Vivian and Adair Manning and was the granddaughter of Governor Richard I. Manning. She was a wildlife artist, naturalist and amateur ornithologist, whose love of birds was a major passion in her life. Her bird study skins are on display in the Smithsonian Museum and her contributions are widely cited in South Carolina Bird Life.Surviving are three sons, Ellison D. Smith IV, of Sullivan's Island, V.M. Manning Smith, of Beaufort, and A. Hunter Smith, of Charleston; and three daughters, Anna Fishel, of Coos Bay, Ore., Clarissa Maulden, of Six Mile, and Gay Lucas Smith, of Westminster.The family requests that any memorials be made to the National Audubon Society, 700 Broadway, New York, NY 10003-9562. -- The Island Funeral Home and Crematory of Hilton Head Island is in charge of arrangements.
