Virginia Wood August 29, 1926 - April 18, 2010 Oakdale - Virginia "Ginny" Wood, 83, wife of the late Robert J. Wood of Oakdale passed away Sunday morning at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. She was born on August 29, 1926 in Manasquan, NJ to the late George and Viola (Jones) Mars. She married Robert James Wood on July 29th, 1946 in Florence, Georgia. He predeceased her in 1989. Virginia was the president and lifetime member of the Chesterfield Firehouse Ladies' Auxiliary and also a member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing bingo at the firehouse and taking a chance on slot machines at the casinos. She loved to knit, dance and was a member of a Groton bowling league for many years. She also loved family picnics and special trips to Las Vegas with her friend of many years, Lucille Bozza of Rochester, NY. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by a brother and a sister. She is survived by four daughters, Virginia Moore of Dumas, TX, Mary Lee and her husband Gary of Jewett City, Martha Bixby of Griswold and Barbara Lusa of Oakdale. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Robert Brown, Angela Jordan, Rachael Abucewicz, Cherylyn Lombardo, James Wood, Casey Moore, Heather Sedoris, Shaun Bixby and Jacob Bixby as well as 7 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind several very close friends and her very special fifth daughter, her beloved dog, Katie. The family would like to thank the Chesterfield Firehouse, New London VNA, Hospice and L&M Hospital for all of their support and loving care. Calling hours will be from 5PM - 8 PM on Wednesday, April 21st at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen on Rte 32 in Montville. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Virginia's name to the Chesterfield Firehouse.
