Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Collier-Butler Chapel for Virginia Speaks Smith, 96, of Gadsden, who died March 13, 2012. The Rev. Larry Fuhrman will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home directing.Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Gadsden, born Sept. 7, 1915. She was a devoted and active member of the First Baptist Church of Gadsden. Other lifelong activities include being an active member of the Edenwood Garden Club and the Goodyear Ladies' Auxiliary. She was an avid bridge player and golfer, winning several tournaments at the Goodyear Golf Club. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn McCarver Smith; son, Glenn McCarver Smith Jr.; and great-grandson, Glenn Smith.She is survived by daughter-in-law, Mrs. Eunice Stephens Smith, Decatur, Ga.; grandchildren, David (Laura) Smith of Cave Spring, Ga., and Stuart (Susanne) Smith of Macon, Ga.; great-grandchildren, LeeAnn, Abigail and Emma Smith; nieces, Ann Battles Shirley and Carol Cooley. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.Pallbearers will be Steven Shirley, Tony Bryant, Stuart Smith, David Smith, Scott Croley and Neil Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be J.T. Harrell, the Rev. Larry Fuhrman, Judge David Kimberley, Jim Stanton, Mrs. Delores Brothers and the Any Person Sunday School class.Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Gadsden.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Collier-Butler Funeral Home.
