ELLSWORTH - Virginia Moore Davis, 97, died June 3, 2009, at a local health care facility. She was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Arthur E. and Mary (Nealley) Moore. As a child, she lived in Southwest Harbor and summered on Gott's Island, the home of her Moore ancestors. She had four younger brothers, Joseph, James, Philip and Arthur, whom she adored and was as much a mother as a sister to them. She also spent time with Louis and Minerva Higgins on Wood's Hill, Surry Road, Ellsworth. She attended high school in Bar Harbor and graduated in 1929 as valedictorian. She worked at Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Co. Virginia married Paul L. Davis, Aug. 30, 1935. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1985, before Paul's death in 1993. In 1947, they built their family home on the Surry Road and raised four children there. It was always a warm and welcome place to visit and gather for special occasions. She was involved in compiling the family genealogies. She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed knitting, quilting, rug braiding and gardening, which she passed on to her daughters. She is survived by a son, Paul and his wife, Virginia; three daughters, Virginia Salsbury and husband, Richard, Nancy Domagala, all of Ellsworth, and Martha Murch and husband, Wayne, of Franklin; 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth Austin, Diane Gaspar, Thomas Domagala, Joseph Domagala, Stephen Salsbury, Stacey Petry, Amy Wares, Althea Brown, Mathew Davis and Eric Murch; 17 great-grandchildren, Melissa, Danielle, Tena, Shaye, Mitchell, Nolan, Davis, Tyler, Scott, Jacob, Alex, Lexi, Palmer, Catherine, Ethan, Jack and Kate; one brother, Arthur Moore and wife, Elise; sister-in-law, Evadna Moore; several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; three brothers, Joseph, James and Philip Moore; and son-in-law, William Domagala. Friends are invited to call 3-5 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 8, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
