Waterford - Virginia (Richards) Jones, 94, of 11 Faulkner Drive, Quaker Hill, passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at her home.She was born on June 4, 1917 in Manchester, Maine the daughter of Carl L. and Mina (Howe) Richards. She married Leo L. Jones of Readfield, Maine on Nov. 29, 1939, he passed away on Sept. 18, 1996.Mrs. Jones attended schools in Augusta, Maine, East Winthrop, and Winthrop, Maine and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1935. She attended Farmington Normal School from 1935-1938 and graduated from Farmington Teacher's College in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree. She was a teacher in Winthrop from 1938-1961 and at Cohanzie Elementary in Waterford from 1961 until she retired in 1971. She is a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star-Abenaki Chapter #116 in Winthrop and a member of Second Congregational Church in New London.Her survivors include a son, Barry L. Jones and his wife, Susan, of Quaker Hill; her grandchildren, Faith Polonski of Beverly, Mass., and Joy Cumings of Austin, Texas; and one great-grandson. Her sister, Avis Millett of Florida; her two nephews, John Davis of Lousiana, and Joseph Davis of Alabama, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Judith Norberg Serra; her sister, Glenis (Richards) Davis; and her brother, Joseph Richards.A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Nov. 29, at Second Congregational Church, New London. Her burial in Maine will be private and there will be no visiting hours.In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Second Congregational Church, 45 Broad St., New London, CT 06320.
