BRATTLEBORO -- Funeral services celebrating the life of Virginia Helen “Ginny” Johnson were conducted Thursday morning at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Terrace Street.Officiating was Pastor Steve Dunklee of Vernon Union Church, who opened the service with words of welcome and the opening prayer.Music for the service was under the direction of organist Susan Dunklee, who offered a medley of hymns, followed by the singing of the hymn “Amazing Grace.”The Old Testament scripture reading from Psalm 139 was read by Eric Johnson, a son. The New Testament scripture reading from John 14:1-27 was read by Joseph Johnson, also a son.Special music included Molly Atamaniuk, a grandniece, singing “It's Still the Cross.”Pastor Dunklee then offered the message, which centered on Psalm 139, one of Mrs. Johnson's favorite passages of scripture, with selections from John 11 and Philipians 1:21.Pastor Dunklee gave testimony to Mrs. Johnson's steadfast faith especially during her period of declining health, and the love and devotion she had for her family.Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Johnson's two sons, Joseph and Eric, and by Alice Horton, a niece, and Michael Atamaniuk, a nephew. Mrs. Johnson was remembered for the dedication and care she gave to her older half sister, Mary Atamaniuk, and for her work ethic and home she made for her family.Those attending joined in singing the hymn of praise, “In the Garden.”The service closed with the final commendation and prayer given by Pastor Dunklee. Committal services and burial followed in the Johnson lot in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery on Orchard Street, where Pastor Dunklee offered committal prayers.Serving as pallbearers were Joseph Johnson, Eric Johnson, sons, James Atomanuk, Michael Atamaniuk, both nephews, Alice Horton, niece and Jeffrey King, a step-grandson.A reception followed the services held at the VFW Post 1034 on Black Mountain Road.Of the many attending the calling hours Wednesday night and the services, delegations present included, former employees from Howard Johnson's Restaurant, Tom Thumb Snack Shop, Eden Park Nursing Home, Community Bible Chapel, and Brattleboro High School, Class of 1949.Mrs. Johnson, 74, of Williams Street, a lifelong resident of Brattleboro, died April 13, 2006, at Eden Park Nursing Home.Arrangements were under the direction of the ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME.u
