Virginia Christie Smith SPARTANBURG, SC-- Virginia Christie Smith died Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice House. She is survived by her husband, Irvine Clifford Smith; and her children, Virginia Christie Smith, Irvine Clifford Smith, Jr. and his wife Alice, and Carter Ann Smith. Other survivors include a sister, Ann Christie Clark and husband Dr. Allen Clark of Montgomery, AL; and a number of nieces and nephews. Christie grew up in Birmingham and attended the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Her love of ballet began when she participated in the Birmingham Civic Ballet. She later taught ballet in Anderson and has been a Life Member of Ballet Spartanburg for many years. Christie developed a passion for the English style of flower arranging which led to the formation of her "Added Touches" business in Spartanburg. Her creative flair enhanced weddings, Beaux Arts Balls, parties, and special events all over the country. Her vision and dedication led to the establishment of the First Presbyterian Sanctuary Guild. Christie was a former member of the Spartanburg Debutante Club, the Elizabeth Heath Study Club, and The Book Review Club. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church at 4:00 PM. The family will welcome friends at a reception after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Ballet Spartanburg, 200 East St. John Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; or the First Presbyterian Sanctuary Guild, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
