Virginia Carol Rodriguez-Smith LYMAN, SC-- Virginia Carol Rodriguez-Smith passed away on Sunday June 27, 2010 at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville, NC, after a long battle with cancer. Carol had a wonderful life. Living in many places and seeing different cultures. She was born in Duncan, SC, on July 6, 1938 to Charlie Harper Newman (1898-1967) and Bessie Nell Frye Newman (1903-1966). She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Francis Newman Center (and her husband Claude Center) of Duncan, SC; and a brother, Charles Kenneth Newman (and his deceased wife Betty Newman) of Cramerton, NC. She is predeceased by her husband of 42 loving years, Reynaldo ("Rod") Rodriguez (1931-1999). They were married on December 22, 1957 at the Duncan Baptist Chapel. Carol is survived by daughter, Leesa Judd and her husband Oscar of Lyman; son, David Rodriguez and wife Tonia of Columbia, SC; and daughter, Kara Webb and husband Charles of Hendersonville, NC; as well as Virgil E Smith. She is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren, Annabelle and Matthew Webb of Hendersonville, NC; Maggie Judd of Lyman, SC; Ava and Mia Rodriguez of Columbia, SC. Her grandchildren were the love of her life. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, a dear niece, Shirley Center Clopton and her husband Henry Clopton of Duncan, SC; Casey Schuff of Duncan, SC; nephew, Donnie Center of Duncan, SC; niece, Karen Newman Davis, of Belmont, NC; and nephew, Chuck Newman of Belmont, NC. She attended James F. Byrnes High School and went on to a career in food service management. She was a member of Hoopers Creek Baptist Church, Fletcher, NC. The family will receive friends at The Wood Mortuary in Greer, SC, on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 8 PM. A memorial service will be held at The Wood Mortuary, Greer, SC, on Thursday, July 1, 2010, at 2:00 PM by the Rev. Phillip Youngblood. Interment and the release of doves will follow in the Wood Memorial Park. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Four Season's Hospice at 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731; or to the charity of one's choice. The family will be at the home in which they all grew up, 20 Pinecrest Road, Lyman, SC (currently the Judd Residence). Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary. com.
