Velma Smith DUNCAN, SC-- Velma Mathis Smith, 94, formerly of 109 Crescent Circle, passed away Tuesday, February 07, 2012. She was the widow of Artes E. Smith and the daughter of the late James O. Mathis and Sallie Bright Mathis. She was the oldest member of the Startex Church of God. She was retired from Toledo Scales. Survivors include five daughters, Sherry Smith and husband Tommy of Hampton, VA, Pat Burgess of Moore, Sondra Williams of Wellford, Arliss Richardson of Boiling Springs and Marlene "Gus" Pearson and husband Danny of Lyman; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, SSgt. Bryan Williams and Dona Harrison. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, February 10, 2012, at the Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Ronald Smalley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials maybe made to Startex Church of God, PO Box 330, Startex, SC 29377.
