BUFFALO -- Velma Simpson Smith, 61, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, where she served as director of the Children's Ministry, Buffalo Garden Club and the Creative Corner Quilting Club. She was preceded in death by her father, Coleman R. Simpson; her twin sister, Thelma Mengedoht; and a brother, Royce C. Simpson. She is survived by her husband, Rev. James L. Smith; two sons, Rev. John E. Smith and his wife, Becky, of Upton, KY, and Timothy L. Smith and his wife, Amy, of Murfreesboro, TN; her mother, Vanda Bloyd Simpson of Louisville; a sister, Carolyn G. Simpson of Louisville; and four grandchildren, Jordan Smith and Hunter Smith, both of Upton, and Stephen Smith and Kristen Smith, both of Murfreesboro. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Buffalo Baptist Church, with Rev. Harold G. Meers, Dr. Grant Jones and Rev. John E. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. EDT Tuesday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. EDT Monday at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville, KY, and after 9:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday at the church until the time of the service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Buffalo Baptist Church Building Fund.
