Velma Harris Smith, age 78, died Thursday morning, Dec. 12, in Florence, Ala., at the home of Charlotte Barrier and Bobby Smith and family, her gracious caregivers during her three-year illness.Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Spry Serenity Chapel of Florence. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel, with burial in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.She was born Sept. 9, 1924, and had resided in Cherokee and Florence, Ala., since 1959.Her parents, James Clifton and Emma Lou Farmer, her daughter, Arlene Harris Aldridge, and her two husbands, John L. Smith and James Allen Harris, predeceased her.She is survived by a daughter, Mitzi Harris Martin of Franklin, Ind.; son, Hardie Harris of Columbus, Ohio; stepson, Kevin Smith of Killen, Ala.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Pallbearers will include David Rutland, Riley Rutland, Evan Rutland, Jeff Atwood, Todd Quick and Bobby Smith.Spry Serenity Chapel of Florence is directing.
