Valerie Smith, 87, a longtime Groveland resident, died on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the Prescott House Nursing Home in North Andover after a long illness. Born in Melrose on December 22, 1922, Valerie was the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Mary (Reynolds) Smith. She was educated in the Melrose Public School, and moved to Groveland in 1965, and later to West Newbury in 2001. She was a long time employee of the State Street Bank and Trust Company in Boston. She was an avid equestrian and owned several race horses at Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs, as well as being involved with many equestrian organizations. She also raised horses at her home at Quaker Corner, Groveland. Valerie is survived by her nephew, Dr. David F. Smith, and his wife, Shanna Rendon, of Grand Junction, Colorado and by her niece Diane M. Smith of Grand Junction; her great-nephew Casey Smith of Grand Junction; and her great-niece, Sarah Mae Kuhlman of Carlsbad, New Mexico; as well as by other family members. She is also survived by many dear friends, including Louanne Blackburn of Boxford and Melita Hutchings of Groveland. Valerie was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Casey, her brother, Irving Newton Smith, and her dear friend, Jack Travers. Arrangements are in the care of Merton E.Roberts Jr. And Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown. There are no calling hours and burial will be private.
