ObituaryThomas Vandiveer Porter, III, age 70, died in an automobile accident in Casa Blanca, Chile on Friday, March 30, 2001. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 16, 1930. He was a graduate of the University of Florida, Class of 1953, where he was a member of the SAE Fraternity. In 1952, he married Tonie Benson at St. Ann Catholic Church. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. Upon his return, he was devoted to his family and to his chosen home, Naples, Florida. As a young man, he was a member of the Naples Jaycees and was involved in the transfer of the county seat from Everglades City to Naples. He served on the Collier County Mosquito Control Board from 1963 to 1986. An Independent Insurance Agent, he was President of B.I.A. for many years. He was Chairman of the Board of the Mercantile Bank of Naples, a charter member of Naples Bay Rotary, a member of the Elk's Club, past President of the Collier County Historical Society and an active Master Gardener. He was a charter member of the Naples Sailing Club, a member of the Naples Yacht Club and the Moorings Country Club. Never lacking enthusiasm, his interests included golf, travel, antique cars and toys of all kinds. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was a kind man, a friend to many and a teacher to some. He is survived by his wife, Tonie (Benson); his children, Clarice (Reesa Truesdall), Thomas (Van), Christina (Chrissie Forbes) and John. His greatest joys were his grandchildren, Heather and Lizzy Truesdall, Aimee, Thomas and Robbie Porter, and Jonathan and Anna Porter. Also surviving Mr. Porter are his sister, Virginia Carroll and nephews, Robin Carroll and Bill Goodloe. Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday, April 17 at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church, 475 9th Avenue South, Wednesday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. A reception for family and friends will be held at the Naples Yacht Club following the service. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Naples Bay Rotary Scholarship Fund, P.O.
