ROGERS, Thomas Pettit, III, Lieutenant Colonel (USAF Ret), 58, of Waxhaw, N.C., loving husband, father, and grand- father, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 17, 2003. He passed away after a fiv e-year battle with melanoma. He was devoted to God, his family, and his country. Tom was born in Frankfort, Ky. to Thomas Pettit Rogers II, who preceded him in death, and Muriel Wilson Rogers of Naples, Fla. His brother, Brian Wilson Rogers, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cyndie; his sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Lynn of Nashville, Tenn., Paul and Hayeon of Sycamore, Ill. and Daniel and Jane of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Mary Kate, Victoria, Christopher, Mark, Jerry, Melissa, Matthew, and James; his aunt and uncle, Roe and Marthajane Rogers of Frankfort, Ky.; his mother-in-law, Marcella Biederman; his sister-in-law, Ami Mondeaux and her husband, Ralph Mondeaux of Weddington, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Beverly Hood and her husband, John Hood of Omaha, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Christ Covenant Church (PCA) since moving to Charlotte three years ago. Tom served two tours in Vietnam flying both the O-1A and F-4E. He retired in 1990 after 22 years of distinguished service. Among the awards he earned were the Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, he flew as a pilot for United Airlines for 13 years. Throughout Tom's life, he experienced the effectual call of his Savior Jesus Christ, lived a life wo rthy of that call, fought the good fight, and found life in death. He shared the gospel with others in the hope that everyone would believe. That gospel, put simply, is that Jesus came to live the perfect li fe we could not; He paid the penalty for sin that we deserved; He rose again to ensure our eternal life with Him. A memorial service will be held at Christ Covenant Church Matthe ws, N.C. on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with visitation at the church at 10 a.m. The burial with full military honors will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at Arlington National Cemetery.
