GRIFFIN, Thomas Joseph III, 77, of Leesburg, Fla., died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at 5512 King James Ave., Leesburg. Thomas was born in Black River, N.Y., and had lived in Tampa since 1996. He retired from the Air Force after 23 years, and had also retired from the Hillsborough County Sheriff' s Department after 20 years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, former eucharistic minister at St. Mary' s Catholic Church in Lutz, Fla., for 9 years, and gardening was his specialty and passion. He attended St. Paul' s Catholic Church in Leesburg. He is survived by his wife, Helen Griffin of Leesburg; daughters, Debra Phillips of Atlanta, Ga., Carol Lynn Thornton of Leesburg, and Sandra Brugman of Leesburg; son, Thomas Joseph IV of Leesburg; grandchildren, Ian Thornton, Erin Cox, Chase Phillips, Thomas Joseph V and Ashley Griffin; great-grandchildren, Ian and Avery Thornton; and sisters Barbara Brady of Camden, N.Y., and Sally Ferris of Leesburg. Services will be 11 a.m. May 15, 2008, at St. Paul' s Catholic Church. Burial will be at Florida National Cemetery, with Father Kent Walker officiating. Donations may be made to Hospice of Lake and Sumter County, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778. Beyers Funeral Home and Crematory in Leesburg is in charge of the arrangements.
