Thomas J. Gillespie III, 84, died March 9, 2009. He grew up in Pittsburgh and lived in Vero Beach. He graduated from Deerfield Academy and Princeton University. He served as a soldier in the European Theater in World War II. He was Presbyterian. He worked at Lockhart Iron & Steel Co., succeeding his father as president in 1968 and retiring in 1989. He served as a member of the Lockhart Board of Directors for more than 50 years. He served on the board of directors of Union National Bank, Integra, Bennett Supply and Mellon-Stuart. He was leader of the YMCA of Pittsburgh from 1951 until his death, serving as a member of the board of directors, board of trustees and as the chairman of the board. He also was active with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania, where he served on the board of directors. He was a member of the Butler Country Club, Grand Harbor Golf and Beach Club and Bent Pine Golf Club. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Killmeyer Gillespie; sons, Thomas J. Gillespie IV and David M. Gillespie; daughters, Carolyn Raetzke and Louise Cannon; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn McIntyre Gillespie. Memorial contributions can be made to the Hibiscus Children's Center, 1145 12th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held in Pittsburgh, with a memorial to be conducted in Vero Beach at a later time. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
