THOMAS A. SHROUT, III1944-2008Thomas A. Shrout, III, passed away in Pensacola, Fl. on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at the age of 64.He was born to Barbara Strauss Shrout and Thomas A. Shrout, Jr. in El Paso, Texas on June 10, 1944, four days after his father, a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, jumped in Normandy on D-Day. He lived in El Paso until his family moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1950. Tommy served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before earning a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Athens State College in Athens, Alabama. He earned a Master's Degree from Auburn University at Montgomery. He worked as a Mental Health Counselor in both Alabama and Florida. He loved golf, basketball, Alabama football, military history, horses, horticulture, and his family. His family and friends will remember him as a quiet man with a dry wit and inimitable sense of humor.His survivors include his former wife and devoted friend, Mary N. Gano; his daughter Jessica S. Simmons, her husband Paul, and their daughter, Katherine; his daughter, LT Amy E. Shrout, who serves in the Navy as her father once did; his son, Thomas A Shrout, IV, his mother, Barbara S. Knickelbine; his brother, George Roderick Shrout, his wife, Lorene, and their daughters, Lori and Jennifer; his brother, Dr. David P. Shrout, and his wife Karen; his sister Barbara S. Payne, her husband, Dr. Henry H. Payne, and their daughter, Nichole. His father, Thomas A Shrout, Jr. preceded him in death.A private service for the family will be held on Wednesday, July 9, at Barrancas National Cemetery. Trahan Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff of Baptist Hospital for all the loving care they gave our Tommy. In lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of your choice or to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust at 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Kentucky, 41076 would be greatly appreciated.
