Thelma J. Smith Jackson The Rev. Thelma Juanita Smith Jackson, 75, a native and longtime resident of Lakeland, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, in Tallahassee. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday, April 21, at New Mount Zion AME Church, 1401 Old Bainbridge Road, Tallahassee, with the Rev. John White II officiating.Burial will be at 2 p.m. EDT Monday, April 23, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lakeland. Tillman Funeral Home of Monticello (850-997-5553) is handling arrangements. The Rev. Jackson was a retired educator, having taught at Rochelle, Jewett and Winston elementary schools in Polk County. She retired as a reading specialist after serving as an educator for more than 35 years.She was an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and had been the pastor of St. James AME Church in Clearwater and Bethel AME in Tampa. The Rev. Jackson was the widow of the Rev. Curtis Jackson, who was also an AME pastor. She was a 1952 graduate of Florida A&M University and received her master's in the arts of teaching from Rollins College in Orlando.Since 1992, she had resided primarily in Tallahassee. The Rev. Jackson leaves to mourn her passing a devoted and loving son, Dwayne Cargile of Tallahassee; a sister, Jeanette Simmons of Fort Washington, Md.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
