March 20, 2004 Sue Virginia (Ernst) Kelly, 70, of Montpelier, died March 20, 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Kelly was born in Syracuse, New York on August 29, 1933, daughter of Helen (Hudson) and Grant William Ernst. She married Bernard David Kelly on August 22, 1959 and moved to Montpelier in the early 1960s. Mrs. Kelly was a longtime employee of the Montpelier Public School System. Throughout her life, she was active in many community organizations. She served as a deaconess at Bethany Congregational Church, and co-founded and chaired the Central Vermont Chamber of Commerce Craft Fair for many years. An avid gardener and consummate hostess, Mrs. Kelly lived life fully even after being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and bravely fought overwhelming medical problems for many years. Survivors include her daughter, Alison, son-in-law, Kenneth Alpern and grandson, Grant Harris Alpern of Atlanta, GA; sister, Helen Douglas of Syracuse, NY; brother, Stanton Ernst of Olney, MD; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband and her sister, Jeanette Douglas. Barber and Lanier Funeral and Cremation Services in Montpelier is handling the arrangements. A graveside service will be held later this spring, time and date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Sue V. Kelly Scholarship Fund, ATTN: Val Belanger, Montpelier High School, 5 High School Drive, Montpelier, VT 05602.
